SIX-NIGHT RACE PACKAGE ITINERARY: June 13-19, 2017

 

June 13 - Arrive in Antananarivo. Transfer to the 4-star Colbert Hotel for early check-in. Welcome reception and dinner briefing about the culture and wildlife of Madagascar.

Dinner included.

Overnight: Hotel Colbert

 

June 14 - City tour with guide and lunch, including visit to the Malagasy Academy's tiny but remarkable museum of natural history and anthropology, and the Queen's royal compound (including the last remaining portal in the city's ancient fortifications). 

Breakfast and lunch included.  Dinner on your own.

Overnight: Hotel Colbert

 

June  15 - Transfer after breakfast to the airport for the one hour flight to Toliara. Board vehicles or mini-buses for the 3-4 hour scenic tour to Isalo. Hotel check-in, welcome cocktail reception and orientation briefing.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Overnight: Jardin du Roy or Relais de la Reine

 

June 16 - After breakfast, you will meet your guide and drive to the starting trail for a 3-4 hour hike. You will enjoy natural pools, waterfalls and be on constant watch for groups or lemurs. 
Afternoon training run on part of the course.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at hotel included.

Overnight: Jardin du Roy or Relais de la Reine

 

June 17 - Morning drive into town for a sapphire mine tour provided by a Swiss gemologist. This area produces some of the world's purest sapphires which were first unearthed only 25 years ago. A boom town continues to flourish alongside the mining areas. Afternoon race check-in and briefing around the pool at Jardin du Roy. Pre-race pasta dinner for all.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at hotel included.

Overnight: Jardin du Roy or Relais de la Reine

 

June 18 - Race Day. The start at 7:00am is at Jardin du Roy. Finish is at Relais de la Reine, which is a short walk ffrom Jardin du Roy. Post-race party with buffet dinner, entertainment and awards.

Overnight: Jardin du Roy or Relais de la Reine

 

June 19 - Depart hotel for the return drive to Toliara airport for the flight to Antananarivo or extension tour to Mrondava. Evening flight departs for Paris.

FIVE-NIGHT POST-RACE EXTENSION TO MORONDAVA AND ANTASIBE: June 19-24, 2017

NOTE: Due to the limited accommodations in each location, half of the group will be assigned to Option 1 and half the group will be assigned to Option 2. Marathon Tours & Travelreserves the right to adjust the itinerary as necessary in order to adhere to flight schedules, which are subject to change at any time.

 

OPTION #1
June 19 - After landing from Tulear at Tana's Ivato airport, drive off heading East through the Verdant Imerina countryside until you reach Andasibe, about four (4) hours away in the Eastern Rainforest.

Box lunch and dinner at hotel included.

Overnight: Vakona or Andasibe Hotel

 

June 20 - Rise early to hike into Analamazaotra reserve to see and hear the unforgettable babacoot (and other denizens). This is the largest of the lemurs, also known as the Indri indri, and has consistently refused to live in captivity -- this is the only place in the world that you can see them and hear their haunting call. Afternoon visit to "lemur island" at the Vakona. Evening nocturnal walk in mitsinjo's forest. Entrance fees and local guides included.

Lunch and dinner at hotel included.

Overnight: Vakona or Andasibe Hotel

 

June 21 - Return drive to Tana.

Breakfast and lunch included. Dinner on your own.

Overnight: Au Bois Vert. 

June 22 - Transfer to the airport for the flight to Morondava. Visit Baobab Alley and Andranomena reserve (adjacent to Kirindy).

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Overnight: Palissandre West.

June 23 - Day free at the beach. Late afternoon, visit baobab alley to see it at sunset (the best light), then continue to have dinner at the Kirindy research station followed by a nocturnal walk in the forest where, with luck, you might even see the elusive vositse (Giant Jumping Rodent) and other nocturnal residents of the dry deciduous forest of the West.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Overnight: Palissandre West.

 

June 24 - Breakfast and transfer to the airport to fly back to Tana. A representative will be at the airport to help with transfer to your international flight out of Madagascar.

 

OPTION #2

June 19 - Transfer and overnight at Au Bois Vert. 

Dinner on your own.


June 20 - Transfer to the airport for the flight to Morondava. Check-in at Palissandre West situated on a pristine strech of white sand beach. Visit Baobab alley and Andranomena reserve (adjacent to Kirindy).

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Overnight: Palissandre West


June 21 - Day free at the beach. Late afternoon, visit baobab alley to see it at sunset (the best light), then continue to have dinner at the Kirindy research station followed by a nocturnal walk in the forest where, with luck, you might even see the elusive vositse (Giant Jumping Rodent) and other nocturnal residents of the dry deciduous forest of the West.

June 22 - After breakfast transfer to the airport to fly back to Tana. From Tana's Ivato airport, drive to Andasibe, about four (4) hours east in Madagascar's famous Eastern Rainforest. Evening nocturnal walk in the Mitsinjo forest.

June 24 - Breakfast and return drive to Tana; a Cortez rep will be at the airport to help with transfer to your international flight out of Madagascar.

 

HOTEL INFORMATION

 

Jardin du Roy and Relais de la Reine - These sister hotels will act as the Race Headquarters. The unique 4-star properties are hidden away off the main road and offers 15 buildings that include 3-4 rooms in each unit. Exteriors are constructed of hand cut granite with intricate stone work. Rooms are beautifully furnished from palissandre (Madagascan mahogany). The main buildings have a comfortable bar and restaurant and free Wi-Fi. Enjoy lovely views from the large pool or schedule treatments in the spa. The course starts and finishes at Jardin du Roy and finishes at Relais de la Reine.

 

Vakona Lodge, Perinet - Situated in the eastern rain forest this lodge blends with is natural surroundings to lure you away from civilization.

 

Palissandre Hotel, Morondavo - Located directly on a beautiful white sand beach, this 4-star property offers 29 bungalows made of mahogany and other local materials. Each unit includes air conditioning, canopy bed, satellite TV, minibar, hair dryer and internet connection. Relax by the pool with a cool drink or enjoy the full service spa and in the evening enjoy the sunset from your private balcony.
