It has been held each year since 2021 within the <a href=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/london-marathon\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/london-marathon\/\">TCS London Marathon<\/a> (2021, 2022), the <a href=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/chicago-marathon\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/chicago-marathon\/\">Bank of America Chicago Marathon<\/a> (2023), the <a href=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/sydney-marathon\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/sydney-marathon\/\">TCS Sydney Marathon<\/a> (2024), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/new-york-city-marathon\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/new-york-city-marathon\/\">TCS New York City Marathon<\/a> (2025). The 2026 event takes place within the <a href=\"https:\/\/marathontours.com\/en-gb\/events\/cape-town-marathon-agwc\/\">Sanlam Cape Town Marathon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>How do runners qualify?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Athletes must be registered at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmarathonmajors.com\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"www.worldmarathonmajors.com\">worldmarathonmajors.com<\/a> to claim their rankings results and be eligible for an invitation to the Championship event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two pathways to qualification for the 2027 championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finish in a qualifying position in your age group. Exact qualifying slots per age group will be announced in summer 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run the spring 2026 Global Marathon virtual race through the AbbottWMM Global Run Club. There are 200 places available through this route. Enter at globalrunclub.com<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>When do runners receive their invitations?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a change to previous qualification process, there will be no automatic qualifying times used due to the high demand for places in Tokyo. For the 2027 championship, qualified athletes will be determined by their position in their Age Group World Ranking after the rankings close on September 30.
