It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. With the opening of Xiamen as a commercial port in 1843, Gulangyu gradually became an international settlement and an important window for Sino-foreign exchanges. It was one of the most important Chinese ports along the historic Maritime Silk Roads.
