Bhutan or Druk Yul (the land of the Thunder Dragon) as it is known in Bhutanese, is mystical, enchanting and like nowhere you have ever been. Remote and isolated it is the last great Himalayan kingdom. Although completely cut off for centuries it has tried to let in some aspects of the outside world while fiercely guarding its customs and traditions.

The Bhutanese people with their Buddhist beliefs have a strong sense of identity and of the interdependence between man and nature, expressed through the national policy of Gross National Happiness and concern for the environment. Its environment is wild and pristine and it is home to some of the world’s highest unclimbed mountains, the last great undestroyed forests of the Himalayas and exotic wildlife.

Regularly voted one of the world’s top travel destinations, Bhutan still remains accessible only to the privileged few. The Thunder Dragon Marathon is your chance to see the country at ground level, to immerse yourself in its unique culture and enjoy an unforgettable running and travel experience.

The Thunder Dragon Marathon highlights all of the aspects of Bhutan that make it so special. Running through the beautiful Paro Valley, the route takes in fantastic mountain scenery and features many iconic landmarks, such as the Tigers Taktsang Monastery (also known as Tigers Nest), Paro Dzong and many religious Chorten or shrines. It is a true mountain and cultural experience.

Make it a tour of a lifetime by combining our Great Wall and Bhutan Thunder Dragon packages. Compare two historic cultures, from the bustle of China to the quiet tranquility of Bhutan. The Dragon Challenge is two (2) challenging races separated by 1800 miles and eight (8) days!

      Race Time: 9:00 AM

Course: The race route starts at Udumwara, underneath the cliff that the Tiger’s Nest is built on. The route is approx. half road surface and half farm trails, on the full marathon there is a 4K section of single track.

The first 8K are on road surfaces and slightly downhill alongside the Paro Chu (river). At 8km the half marathon splits off to the right and makes its way up and behind Paro Dzong (Fort). The full marathon carries straight on with a long and gradual climb alongside the Wang Chu (river) on farm tracks above rice fields.

At 18K the marathon route crosses the river and returns towards Paro on the other side on a gentle downhill gradient to 25K. Here, the route has the toughest climb, for about 4km on road, rising above the Paro National Museum, then on single track for 1km to the highest point of the race at 2.560m.

Dropping back down to the Paro Chu the marathon and half marathon re-join beneath Paro Dzong to cross the famous wooden bridge. The last 10K for both distances are on a gradual but long uphill climb on a mix of road and wide farm track, rising above Paro Chu, with views of the river and rice fields, before dropping into the finish back at Udumwara.

The total height gain on the marathon is 995m and for the half 450m. The altitude at the start is 2.400m and the lowest point, in Paro Town, is 2,200.

Our group, the ease of itinerary, the trek, Bhutan – everything! I felt like we were on a very local and cultural trip that didn’t feel like a ‘tour’.

"We had a travel group that meshed very well..." - 2023

We had a travel group that meshed very well. Many solo travelers, like myself, so that was reassuring from the start.

"It was one of the best experiences of my life..." - 2023

It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was my first trip to Asia and I will not be deterred by the long flight to go again. I am so glad the cultural component of the trip was as rich and varied as it was and that it was presented to us by such a wonderful young man from Bhutan. He treated us like family and really helped me see the interweaving of Buddhism into all aspects of living in Bhutan. I tell everyone if they want a special experience they will always remember they need to travel to Bhutan. If they are a runner I emphasize how fantastic the marathon experience was as well.

      "A truly incredible experience!" - 2023

A truly incredible experience! I would highly recommend a trip to Bhutan.

"The guides and staff were phenomenal!" - 2023

COVID-19 - Messages of Client Support

Thank you to Ms. Suter for her excellent piece on what to do if your race is cancelled. Her writing reminded me to refocus on mindfulness and to maintain the training plan for the Outback. Her counsel applies not only to running but to life in general. In line with something Ms. Suter writes, I recently resumed yoga to help deal with the Covid-19 stress. I had started following a Runner’s World yoga DVD in the months prior to Bhutan to prepare spiritually. Ironically I dropped yoga when we returned to the states because I felt too busy!

That leads to my next thought. We were reminiscing the past two days about our wonderful time in Bhutan. Thank you to the great staff at Marathon Tours & Travel. These memories, plus Patagonia and the Big 5 tours, remind us of the beauty in the world. We greatly appreciate the work Ann and Stephanie have done for us. We look forward to traveling again.

"You can't explain the country, you have to see it..." - 2019

You can’t explain the country, you have to see it. People still can’t believe the course we ran.

"If one wishes to experience a deep Buddhist culture..." - 2019

If one wishes to experience a deep Buddhist culture, which is striving to maintain its true identity in the beauty of the Himalayas, with the bonus of a foot race, this is the life experience for you.

"What did I like best? All aspects of the Druk Path Trek..." - 2019

What did I like best? All aspects of the Druk Path Trek, visit to temples, Buddhist monks’ blessing before the race and local nature of the race. Hotels and van were comfortable, food good and communication excellent.

"Brutally difficult course, but very well marshaled..." - 2019

Brutally difficult course, but very well marshaled. I was worried about the spacing between the water stops, but having full sized bottles of water to carry worked quite well.

"If I could, I would give our guides an 11 out of 10..." - 2019

If I could, I would give our guides an 11 out of 10. They were phenomenal — knowledgeable, personable, terrific.

      "Loved the course..." - 2018

Loved the course… It was difficult but so so so enjoyable… The scenery was spectacular… The single track was FUN! Course markings were excellent, rest stops plentiful.

"I was thrilled with the beauty of the country..." - 2018

I was thrilled with the beauty of the country and being able to spend so much time hiking it. The camaraderie of most participants and staff added to the fun

      "This is a unique trip..." - 2018

This is a unique trip because the run is actually secondary in the experience. Words really can’t describe it, I’m telling friends to go and then lets talk!

"It was professionally organized..." - 2018

It was professionally organized, the guides were great, every day was an adventure, the hikes, especially Tigers Nest was just awesome. Jeff’s attention to detail and his ability to connect with everyone on the trip makes it a great experience.

"Inspirational, spiritual and unique." - 2018

      Inspirational, spiritual and unique.

"Our tour guide was absolutely wonderful..." - 2018

Our tour guide was absolutely wonderful. His organisational skills were second to none and he never missed a thing. During the trek he was always calm, kind and knowledgeable and looked after everyone. Once back in Thimphu and Paro he was on top of everything without having to be asked. He is probably the best guide we have had over the course of many trips. We cannot speak highly enough of him.

      "Very physically difficult..." - 2018

Very physically difficult which led to an even deeper spiritual journey.

"Jeff was terrific as were the local guides..." - 2018

Jeff was terrific as were the local guides. I appreciate having a MTT representative on-site who is very knowledgeable, helpful and truly cared about my well-being. Also, the nicest and most enjoyable local guides and drivers of any tour I’ve ever taken.
