      Petra Desert Marathon & Half-Marathon!

The day we have all been waiting for! After an early wake-up and light continental breakfast, all runners meet outside the Petra Visitor Center at 5:15 AM. All participants will walk together through the Siq to the start line at the Street of Facades. As Petra is not open to the public at this time of day, runners will get the unique experience of seeing Petra without the crowds.

The marathon and half-marathon start at 6:30 AM. Although regarded as an official race, following international competition rules, it is important to remember that it is first and foremost an adventure marathon in which the experience, scenery, and satisfaction in completing the event is more important than your time. Runners receive their medal and refreshments at the finish line.  Consider booking Petra Kitchen tonight from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM and enjoy making traditional Jordanian cuisine and feasting with friends.  It is a fun way to celebrate the completion of your Petra race day. (limited space)

In the evening, we offer  the opportunity to experience Petra Kitchen (limited availability & additional cost):

In this hands-on cooking class, under the professional guidance of your chef, you will learn how to cook some of the most tasteful Jordanian dishes including delicious appetizers and a traditional main course. All participants will enjoy the meal together and the full recipe is shared, so you can cook for your friends and family at home. A fun and festive way to celebrate your completion of the Petra Desert Marathon or Half-Marathon! The class starts at 5:30 PM and will last about 2.5 hours.

      Petra Sightseeing and Celebration Dinner

Today is the day to explore Petra in its full glory. After breakfast, walk to the Petra Visitor Center where the guided tour begins. The main entrance to the historical and archeological city of Petra is the Siq. With walls rising to 200 meters in height, this narrow gorge, split apart by tectonic forces, winds its way 1.2KM through the mountains and ends at Petra’s most elaborate temple, the Treasury. We continue past the marvelous tombs and caves carved out of the red sandstone cliff, while our guide tells us about the old Nabateans who created the city. After time to explore the area and have lunch (on your own), you can continue exploring Petra and return to your hotel at your leisure. This evening all participants will head to the desert, where we celebrate the completion of the Petra Desert Marathon and Half-Marathon with a festive celebration dinner. Dine, drink and dance under the stars! (Breakfast and dinner included)

  • Event Information

    • Race Date: September 7, 2024

      Start Time: 6:30 AM

Entry Fee: The entry fee is $300 USD

Time Limit: All runners have seven (7) hours to complete the race. Runners still on the route after the cut-off time will be picked up by a race official or medical car and driven back to the finish area. Five hours after the start however, the route closes at the 31 KM mark (10 KM for the half marathon) meaning that runners who haven’t passed this point by 11:30 AM will not be allowed to finish the race.

The Course: From the start line in the Street of Facades, the route goes through the ancient city of Petra and right away you will find yourself surrounded with tombs, caves and monasteries carved in the mountainsides.  A 2 KM uphill section on paved road leads runners out of the Petra Archaeological Park boundaries and via the main road towards the desert on hilly tarmac road.  After 6KM, the route leaves the asphalt road and continues into the desert. Half-marathon runners take the direct way to the river bed gorge “Siq Al Bard” while marathon runners loop around the hill top “Al Musirh”. Leaving Siq al Bard at Little Petra, the route is back on the tarmac road heading towards the village of Ammarine

Just before the village half-marathon runners continue straight through the village while marathon runners turn left on the road leading to Wadi Araba to do a 8 KM back tracking stretch running past incredible rock formations that only few tourists visit.

When passing the 30 KM mark, full marathon runners find themselves back at Ammarine Village and merge again with the half-marathon course. From here, the route goes uphill to a mountain ridge for the next 5 KM, but the strenuous efforts are rewarded with an astonishing view over most of the marathon route, the mountains covering Petra and on clear days even Israel can be seen. On this mountain ridge the surface becomes gravel for the next 3 KM. The final 4 KM are steep downhill running on paved roads towards the finish line.

Temperature: It is very hot in Jordan. Be prepared for temperatures to be in the high range of 90F.

Eligibility: Marathon runners must be 18 years of age or older on race day. Half-Marathon runners must be 16 years of age or older on race day.

Awards: All finishers receive a medal. A small, symbolic prize is given to the winners of both distances for men and women. There is no prize money.

Difficulty: Difficult. Hilly course with an ascent of roughly 1,200 meters and a descent of 1,100 meters. Be prepared for unrelenting heat with temps between 85-103F.

Born and raised in Canada, Marcie discovered the magic of road cycling in grade six after earning a 10-speed bike selling oranges for her school fundraiser. Although active in soccer, basketball and rowing during her school years, she admits that physical activity took a backseat to a career in design.

While raising her kids in New England, she rekindled her love of cycling in 2016 and, as a personal challenge, added running and swimming in 2018 to compete in her first 70.3 Triathlon in Prague, CZ to celebrate her 50th birthday. Since then, she has completed two full and five half distance triathlons; and a number of gravel and CX races. Her love of travel and cycling has spurred her to ride her bike more than 24,000 miles in the last six years including multi-day adventures across Czech Republic and three different states. She has circumvented Lake Champlain and conquered mountains in Austria, Canada and the US on two wheels.

Though competitive in nature and fueled by the excitement of a new venue, Marcie found that her greatest joy in racing Triathlon came from the challenge of planning for the unexpected and getting to know people along the course, hearing their stories and motivations and finding out their “WHY”.
