Marathon Tours & Travel has proudly offered the Antarctica Marathon® & Half-Marathon since the event began in 1995. As the exclusive tour operator and official event organizer, we are thrilled to welcome 360 runners and supporters in 2027 across two extraordinary voyages, now featuring a 10K on each departure and the Ultra 50K on Voyage One!
Your Antarctica adventure begins with a three‑night stay in Buenos Aires, where you’ll connect with fellow runners, explore the city’s rich culture, and attend the required Welcome Dinner/Trip Briefing. From there, we’ll fly to Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina to board the Ocean Victory and set sail toward the White Continent. The racecourse on King George Island winds along gravel roads linking the scientific bases of Uruguay, Chile, China, and Russia
During this unforgettable journey, you’ll experience the most pristine wilderness on Earth, encountering towering glaciers, floating icebergs, and abundant wildlife including penguins, seals, and whales. The onbaord expedition crew will enhance your understanding of the region through engaging lectures, while landings offer up-close exploration of remote sites, wildlife colonies, and research stations. Marathon Tours & Travel is committed to conservation and has raised more than $600,000 for Oceanites, a nonprofit dedicated to studying climate change and the impact of tourism in Antarctica.
For many runners, completing a race on all seven continents is a once‑in‑a‑lifetime goal, and we’re here to help make that dream a reality. Join us in 2027 for an unparalleled running adventure on the White Continent!

Travel Insurance
Polar Latitudes requires travel insurance for all guests. There is a minimum requirement for Emergency Evacuation insurance coverage in the amount of $200,000 USD per passenger, as well as printed proof of insurance for their Expedition Staff, if requested while onboard the vessel. This plan should also cover personal injury, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, and pre-existing medical conditions. This is mandatory for each person!
To learn more or get a quote from Travel Guard, please visit: Travel Guard for US Residents or Travel Guard for Canadian Residents.
If you live outside the United States, you will need to obtain the required coverage through an insurance provider in your home country. A simple online search for “Emergency Medical Evacuation Insurance” should give you a list of local companies that offer the mandatory coverage needed for this trip.
Please keep in mind that travel insurance rates vary based on factors such as age, pre‑existing medical conditions, and location. Marathon Tours & Travel recommends purchasing travel insurance within 14 days of your 35% deposit being processed in order to secure the best pricing and access to additional benefits, such as coverage for pre-existing conditions (subject to change). You may adjust your policy later once your flights and any trip extensions have been finalized.

Event Information
-
Race Date:
Voyage One: March 8, 2027
Voyage Two: March 18, 2027
Race Time: Two Waves (approx. 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM)
Course: The course will likely begin and end approximately 200 meters from Bellingshausen, the Russian research base. Final course measurement and preparation take place the day before the race, as base activity, road conditions, and weather can all influence the final route. Our preferred layout includes access to all four nearby bases – China, Chile, Russia, and Uruguay, which allows us to set a three‑loop course for the marathon.
The terrain consists entirely of dirt/gravel “roads” used for transportation between the bases that are frequently muddy and uneven. Runners will encounter sections with rocks, loose gravel, mud puddles, and areas of snow or ice depending on conditions. Please note that there are no indoor facilities available on course, and all runners must be fully self‑sufficient.
Since base operations, weather, and road conditions can change rapidly, the course is adjusted each year. These dynamic factors require us to maintain several alternate course options, and modifications may be made as needed to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
Difficulty: Very Difficult. This is a challenging trail course with steep climbs, uneven terrain, and fully self‑sufficient conditions. All participants should be well‑trained and prepared to add at least 30 –45 minutes to their average road race time.
Environmental Commitment: The course on King George Island has marked gravel roads that connect the scientific research bases of Uruguay, Chile, China and Russia. Great care is taken to leave behind zero impact on the environment in this sensitive ecosystem. As part of this, we are restricted to having a maximum of 100 passengers ashore for the event at any one time. Marathon Tours & Travel takes their part seriously and in fact has raised more than $600,000 for Oceanites, the non-profit scientific organization that monitors the effects of climate change and the impact of tourism on Antarctica.
Charitable Objective: Each year Marathon Tours & Travel offers runners the opportunity to sponsor an official Antarctica Marathon® Mile Marker(s). The proceeds of the Mile Markers are donated to Oceanites, which is the official non-profit organization of the Antarctica Marathon®. In return, the runner gets to keep his/her sponsored mile marker after the race as a great souvenir! Oceanites has been researching the effect of climate change and tourism on Antarctica for more than 30 years. They have collected valuable data on wildlife and plant populations to support further research on this most pristine part of our planet. In addition to the sponsored mile markers there is a live on-board auction during the tour with all proceeds also going to Oceanites!
Temperature: Average temperatures range between 15F-34F minus the wind chill, which can lower it by about 10F. Heavy snow is rare but light flurries are common.
Course Time Limit: Ultramarathon runners must finish in under eight (8) hours, weather permitting; you must be through the halfway point by 3:45 race elapse time. Marathoner runners must finish under seven (7) hours weather permitting; you must be through the halfway point by 3:15 race elapse time. Half-Marathoner runners must finish under four (4) hours and thirty (30) minutes, weather permitting. 10K runners must finish under two (2) hours, weather permitting. Course marshals have the responsibility to disqualify any runner who might endanger himself or herself through fatigue, hypothermia or dehydration.
Race Briefing: Race check-in and the briefing with emphasis on the environmental rules and regulations governing this event will be held at the Welcome Dinner in Buenos Aires. Attendance is mandatory for participation in the race.
Shoes: A trail shoe that is water-resistant and designed for off-road running is best. Bring two pair since it might be wet and muddy. Racing flats are not recommended.
NOTE: trekking poles or any other aid are not allowed.
Recommended Packing List: LINK
Eligibility: All runners must be at least 18 years of age on race day for participation in the ultramarathon, marathon, half-marathon, or 10K.
Awards: The top three (3) male and female overall winners of each race (Ultramarathon, Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 10K) will be recognized. The following Age Groups will be included in the scoring for the race distance, provided there are at least 25 participants. The top two (2) male and female runners in each Age Group will be recognized. Overall winners will not be included in the Age Group recognitions. The Age Groups are: Open Division (18 – 39), 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 – 79, and 80+. All finishers will receive a finisher certificate and a medallion.

""More than a race, this was an adventure..." - 2026
More than a race, this was an adventure trip of multiple dimensions: seeing Buenos Aires, one of the great world cities, visiting Ushuaia in its spectacular setting, experiencing the historic crossing of the Drake Passage, a spectacular ‘adventure’ race, and experiencing the geology-birds-wildlife-ecology-weather-glaciers-history-extremes of a unique place on earth. It is really multiple trips for one price.

Everything was of high quality and all trips and transfers were effortless from our perspective. Hotel, boat, locations, food and drinks were all faultless. Couldn’t have had a better trip in this respect.
"Honestly, the entire trip was beyond any expectations..." - 2024Honestly, the entire trip was beyond any expectations I could have ever had! The race was awesome, the excursions were unbelievable, the staff were exceptionally kind. 10/10 experience.
"Otherworldly, incredibly beautiful..." - 2023Otherworldly, incredibly beautiful, eye-opening, deeply informative, comfortable, so well put together by very experienced people, and “go to Antarctica with Marathon Tours & Travel”.
"This was a life enhancing experience..." - 2023This was a life enhancing experience. To have been able to share this with two of my sons, made the experience even more special. It was the realization of a dream – for me, but also for them.
"One of the most challenging..." - 2019One of the most challenging, thus one of the most rewarding for having completed it. As I said to Thom, I don’t care about the wind, sleet, hills, mud or any other conditions; I’m just glad he pulled it off and we got an opportunity to run. What an amazing marathon with all of the politics, weather, logistics and other pieces that have to come together. We’re so fortunate that Thom was crazy enough to do it for 20 years.
"Antarctica is just such a spectacular destination..." - 2019Antarctica is just such a spectacular destination, and the staff made us feel right and home. The entire expedition was extraordinary. I am very appreciative of having the opportunity to run in an event like this. The expeditions were probably my favorite part, outside the marathon itself. I was not expecting the rest of the trip to be so inspiring that I almost forgot about the marathon by the end!
"The pre-trip conference call was excellent!" - 2019The pre-trip conference call was excellent! Jeff did an outstanding job covering what we needed to know about the race. I really appreciated his guidance on layering; it was detailed and very specific. I followed his advice to the letter and was perfectly dressed for race day. He was timely, covered all the details, and answered all the questions with the information runners wanted to know. It was a very well run conference call. It’s clear he’s a seasoned professional and I felt in good hands with his guidance.

Jeff found his way to Marathon Tours & Travel the same way many do—through a love of running and adventure. What started as a personal quest to explore the world through marathons turned into something much bigger, blending his passion for travel, endurance sports, and connecting with people. Before joining the team, he spent years in client-focused leadership roles at Morgan Stanley, always driven by a desire to grow, push boundaries, and help others do the same—whether by achieving their goals, creating lasting impact, or building a meaningful legacy.
A self-proclaimed middle-of-the-pack runner, he’s tackled 51 marathons scattered over all seven continents, earned three Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Medals, and is a proud Seven Continents Club® Finisher. He doesn’t just talk the talk for MTT—he runs it.
Always up for a challenge, he finds just as much joy in climbing, skiing, and paddling as he does in running. No matter how many times he visits a destination, he believes each trip is a chance to see it with fresh eyes, meet new people, and learn something new. He’s deeply involved in the running and adventure community, serving on the board for Oceanites, leading T.O.U.R.S. (Tour Operators United for Runners), and supporting causes close to his heart like Make-A-Wish and Back on My Feet. For him, it’s never just about the finish line—it’s about the journey and the people who make it unforgettable.
